However, it\u2019s also a sign that a company is not exactly proficient in English and prefers to rely on cheap machine translation tools instead of native speakers, thus saving money in the wrong place.<\/p>\n\n<p>But there is some good news: According to a study by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/de.statista.com\/statistik\/daten\/studie\/1138\/umfrage\/fremdsprachenkenntnisse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statista Research Department,<\/a>\u00a0around 70 percent of all adults in Germany have at least a reasonably good knowledge of one or even several foreign languages. The bad news, however: When things get tough and people need a translation quickly, many rely on the online tools mentioned above and fall into the \u201ctranslation trap.\u201d For companies, restaurants, hotels or organizations, in particular, this can backfire and even cause immense costs as well as image damage.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You can also see how much can go wrong when it comes to translation in this funny video from Awkward Puppets. The rebranding campaign that the bank had to launch after this translation mishap cost the company over 15 million euros. Ouch!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In China, there really is a restaurant called \u201cTranslate server error.\u201d The owner had apparently tried to translate the Chinese word for \u201crestaurant.\u201d But the translation tool unfortunately produced an error. As the restaurant owner didn\u2019t notice, a big sign with \u201cTranslate server error\u201d has been emblazoned over his store ever since.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The following example from a hotel is also amusing: \u201cThe lift is being fixed for the next day. During that time we regret that you will be unbearable.\u201d I wonder if the passengers of this broken-down elevator really were \u201cunbearable\u201d?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes, the translations of German proverbs are also incredibly funny. \u201cIch glaub\u2019 ich spinne\u201d (I must be going crazy) ends up as \u201cI think I spider,\u201d or \u201cIch brech\u2019 zusammen\u201d (I\u2019m going to collapse) as \u201cI break together.\u201d And if you want to say that your English is \u201cunter aller Sau\u201d (really, really bad), please don\u2019t translate it as \u201cMy English is under all pig.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By the way, there are also terms that cannot be translated at all:<\/h5>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Indonesian word \u201cJaysus\u201d means something like \u201ca joke so badly told and so unfunny that you have to laugh anyway.\u201d But how can you translate that into a single word?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cProzvonit,\u201d in turn, comes from the Czech and means \u201cto call a cell phone and let it ring only once, so that the other party calls you back and you save money.\u201d Such a shame that we don\u2019t have a word like this!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A German example, on the other hand, is \u201cTorschlusspanik.\u201d This literally means \u201cfear of the door closing on you\u201d but it is used more commonly in the sense of \u201cthe fear of missing out on something (especially due to the fact you are getting too old).\u201d Many have tried, but there is simply no convincing translation into other languages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Top 10 Translation Fails:<\/h5>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Literal translations often backfire spectacularly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incorrect terms and \u201cfalse friends\u201d also definitely belong on this list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of context confuses the reader.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An inappropriate style is also a faux pas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When lay people work on a subject they are not familiar with, this can have negative consequences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most errors occur under pressure (especially time pressures).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incorrect sentence structure can also lead to bizarre results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you don\u2019t proofread and are not able to ask a native speaker for help, you\u2019ll quickly get into trouble.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Care should also be taken with numbers and spellings: For example, an English \u201cbillion\u201d is not a \u201cBillion\u201d in German, but a \u201cMilliarde.\u201d Commas can also be a problem: 9,5 Millionen (German) residents are 9.5 million (English).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Machine translation is most suitable for repetitive and standardized texts.
