Hungarian is the official language in Hungary, has partial official status in neighboring countries or is a recognized minority language. The number of speakers worldwide is estimated at about 15 million. It belongs to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic languages and is thus the only Central European language that does not belong to the Indo-European language family.

Hungarian is an agglutinative language in which word relationships in the sentence are expressed using appended syllables (suffixes). It stands out because of its pronounced abundance of cases – there are about 20 of them! – as well as vowel harmony (vowels within a word belong to a certain vowel group) and it also employs numerous affixes: the smallest word units (morphemes) are attached to the word stem. Words are stressed on the first syllable; vowels and consonants are pronounced short and long, with an accent indicating the length. Loan words in Hungarian come from Latin, Slavic, German and Turkish. The handful of Hungarian dialects differ only slightly from each other.

There is proof of written Hungarian since the 10th century. In the 16th century, a uniform written language began to take shape – not least as a result of the translation of the Bible. Modern Hungarian evolved around 1900. It is written in Latin script with additional special characters for vowels and consonantal double and triple characters, which are counted as separate letters.
