The Finnish language – known as “Suomi” in Finland – is spoken by roughly six million people in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia and Estonia. It is the official language in Finland, where there are 4.7 million native speakers. Finnish belongs to the Baltic-Finnic group of Finno-Ugric languages.
Finnish is written just the way it’s spoken, long vowels and consonants are doubled; even loanwords are adapted to Finnish spelling. The alphabet is the same as for Swedish – with Latin letters and three special characters for vowels at the end of the alphabet. Words are stressed on the first syllable and there is no contrast between voiced and unvoiced sounds. With 14 consonantal sounds, it is extremely limited in terms of consonants. Finnish is a so-called agglutinative language – meaning that word relationships are expressed by means of attached syllables (suffixes). There are no genders and no articles, but there are 15 cases and a complex verb system.

The dialects are divided into two main groups, western and eastern Finnish. Western dialects provide the basis for the written language, which was developed by the Finnish Bishop Mikael Agricola in the 16th century to allow the translation of the Bible (Old Literary Finnish). In the early modern Finnish period until about 1870, the Eastern dialects were increasingly included. The Finnish language has been steadily enriched by the creation of many new words and the inclusion of dialect words. It replaced Swedish as the language of the educated class and eventually of public administration.
