Romanian is the official language in Romania, Moldova and in the autonomous Serbian province of Vojvodina; it is a recognized minority language in Hungary, Ukraine and Serbia. It is spoken by approximately 28 million people, of which about 20 million live in Romania.
As an East Romanian language, Romanian occupies a special position within the Romance languages of the Indo-Germanic language family: In terms of linguistic history, the language developed from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman province of Dacia south and north of the Danube, but it shares many similarities with the Balkan languages. Germanic influences are completely absent, while Slavic influences are evident particularly in the phonology and vocabulary; there are also numerous borrowings from Hungarian, Turkish and modern Greek. There are four major dialect groups, some of which extend to neighboring countries: Dacian Romanian, the language that forms the basis of modern Romanian, Macedo-Romanian (also called “Aromanian”), Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian. A particular feature of the Romanian language is that vowels and consonants have a strong influence on each other grammatically, which causes the body of the word to constantly shift in inflection; it is also rich in double and triple sounds (diphthongs and triphthongs).
There is proof of the Romanian language in writing since the 16th century. Romanian has been written in Latin script since 1860 – prior to that, it was written in Cyrillic. Its current spelling was regulated in 1992. The alignment with the West in the 19th and 20th centuries (“re-romanization”) suppressed the Slavic, Greek, and Turkish components of the language in favor of French and Latin terms to accommodate modern life and the sciences.
