The Turkish language belongs to the Oghuz branch of the Turkic languages. It is spoken by some 58 million people in Turkey, where it is the official language and known as “Turkey Turkish.” It is also widely used in the Balkans and Western Europe, and has a total of 74 million speakers.
Before Kemal Atatürk’s reforms in 1928, Turkish was defined as an Ottoman language and until then had been divided into three developmental stages: Old Ottoman or Old Anatolian Turkish (until the 15th century), Middle Ottoman (16th/17th century) and New Ottoman (until 1928). Turkish is one of the agglutinative languages in which word relationships in the sentence are made clear by means of appended syllables (suffixes). It has five cases, but no gender and no definite article, and is rich in participial constructions as opposed to subordinate clauses. A distinctive feature of the Turkish language is vowel harmony – that is, vowels within a word belong to a certain vowel group. With the exception of the verb, which is always placed at the end of the sentence, the word order is largely free. The vocabulary contains many Arabic and Persian loanwords.
Turkish has numerous and, to a certain extent, widely differing dialects. High Turkish is based on the dialect spoken in the vicinity of Istanbul. Turkish has been written using a Latin alphabet, known as the Turkish alphabet, since 1928. It consists of 29 letters and contains some special characters for certain sounds. The spelling is largely consistent with the pronunciation.
