Danish is an Indo-European language that belongs to the East Scandinavian group of the North Germanic branch of languages. It is spoken by some five million people in Denmark. On the Faroe Islands and in Greenland, it is spoken as a second language. In the German state of Schleswig-Holstein it is protected by law as a minority language. There are about 5.6 million speakers worldwide. Danish developed from Old Norse from Runic Danish (800–1100 AD, the Viking Age) via Old Danish (9th century to about 1500) to Modern Danish (from 1500). The standard Danish language is the so-called “Imperial Danish”; there are also a number of different dialects, but these are becoming less important. Spoken Danish is characterized by weak secondary stress vowels, unvoiced plosives and voiced fricatives; vowels and consonants are elongated. One special characteristic is a vocal cord final sound (Danish glottal stop). The Danish alphabet in Latin letters is structured like the German alphabet, but there are no umlauts and no “ß”. There are, however, three special characters for vowels at the end of the alphabet. In 1948, the spelling was revised; since then, nouns, except proper nouns, have been written in lower case. Danish only has two cases – nominative and genitive – and two genders. Danish is closely related to Swedish and Norwegian, sharing approximately 90 percent of its vocabulary with these two languages. It is also strongly influenced by German and contains many Anglicisms and French loanwords.
